Plot

In an era tainted by war and prejudice, 'Only the Brave' weaves a poignant and unforgettable narrative of the unsung heroes of World War II - the resilient Japanese-American soldiers of the 100th Infantry Battalion and the 442nd Regimental Combat Team. After the devastating attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941, Japanese Americans, despite their loyalty and service to their nation, found themselves victims of fear and suspicion. Stripped of their military duties and with thousands of their kin unjustly interned, they were abruptly painted as the enemy within. Yet, the flame of patriotism didn't flicker out. A band of 1400 Nisei - second-generation Japanese Americans, chiefly from Hawaii, stepped forward, petitioning the U.S. government for the right to serve their country. The 100th Infantry Battalion was born from this show of unwavering loyalty and courage. After enduring strenuous training, they were dispatched to the front lines in North Africa and then Italy, earning the somber nickname of the "Purple Heart Battalion" due to their staggering casualty rate. The journey of these brave Nisei did not end there. In June 1944, they joined forces with the 442nd Regimental Combat Team, formed of Nisei volunteers from internment camps and Hawaii, liberating Northern Italy from the clutches of the enemy. They moved on to free towns in Southern France, their courage never faltering. Their most formidable test came when they were tasked with the perilous rescue of the Texas "Lost Battalion" - 275 men trapped in the hostile terrains of France's Vosges Mountains. Despite their dwindling numbers and exhaustion, the Nisei soldiers plunged into a brutal, uphill battle, saving most of the entrapped Texans while suffering heavy casualties of their own. Over two years of combat, these fearless Nisei soldiers made history, amassing an astonishing 21 Medals of Honor, 9,486 Purple Hearts, eight Presidential Citations, 53 Distinguished Service Crosses, 588 Silver Stars, and 5,200 Bronze Stars. Their saga of valor, sacrifice, and unwavering loyalty has forever marked them as the most decorated unit of their size in American military history. 'Only the Brave' is a cinematic tribute to these forgotten heroes, offering an immersive journey into their hearts and minds, their trials and triumphs, their legacy and valor, seen through the eyes of the men who lived this incredible story.
