One Foot in Heaven (1941)

Set against the backdrop of the early 20th century, "One Foot in Heaven" chronicles the life of William Spence, a Methodist minister, and his wife, Hope Morris Spence. Hailing from Central Canada, William chooses the path of faith over a medical career, much to the dismay of Hope's affluent parents in Stratford, Ontario. Despite the uncertainties of their first assignment in rural Iowa—the only one available—Hope stands by William's side as they embark on their shared journey in 1904. Their new existence initially comes as a culture shock to Hope, who grapples with their compromised economic status and the demanding expectations of their congregation. William, on the other hand, finds clarity and purpose in their circumstances. Over the next two decades, the narrative unravels their lives, marked by the birth of their three children, frequent relocations as William hops from one parish to another across America, and their ever-evolving relationship with their faith and each other. William is characterized by his unwavering convictions, yet he remains open to change when proven wrong. Hope, despite the sacrifices she makes, supports William in his decisions. The only divergence appears with Hope's yearning for a permanent home—a place that offers them, and more importantly their children, a sense of belonging. Their search seemingly ends when they move to a parish in Denver after the Great War, during a period of economic prosperity. They anticipate that the wealth of their congregation will help William realize his divine goals. However, they soon discover that wealth can breed a sense of entitlement that may clash with William's mission of disseminating God's teachings. "One Foot in Heaven" is a captivating exploration of faith, sacrifice, and the trials and triumphs of a devoted couple dedicated to their divine calling.
