In 1937, as the terrifying shadow of Nazism begins to loom ominously over Germany, Walter Redlich, a non-conformist Jewish lawyer, makes the audacious decision to escape the impending peril. Leaving behind his familiar world, he embarks on a journey to the sun-drenched plains of Nairobi, Kenya, trading his courthouse for the challenging life of a farm administrator. His only allies in this strange land are his fellow expatriate Süßkind, and Owuor, his African cook. A year later, his pampered wife Jettel Redlich and their vibrant young daughter Regina reluctantly join him, stepping off the boat into a world unlike any they've ever known.
