Plot

In an entrancing blend of comedy and music, "Not the Messiah (He's a Very Naughty Boy)" (2010) spins a whimsical oratorio rooted in the epic narrative of Monty Python's "Life of Brian" (1979). This theatrical spectacle is set against the backdrop of the ancient Roman Empire, as it unspools the uproarious tale of Mandy, a young woman impregnated by a Roman soldier, and Brian, her son who reluctantly becomes a revolutionary in the People's Front of Judea. As Brian stumbles through the convoluted politics of rebellion, his heart is stolen by the captivating Judith, only for him to be hilariously mistaken for a Messiah, leading to his unfathomable arrest and crucifixion sentence by the Romans. This grand spectacle is peppered with eclectic musical references, ranging from the sublime melodies of Handel, through a scandalously delightful Mozart duet, to the Festival of Nine Carols and the iconic voice of Bob Dylan. The narrative crescendos with the classic finale, "Always Look on the Bright Side of Life," a testament to the timeless humor of Monty Python. Filmed during its exclusive European performance at the Royal Albert Hall in October 2009, this cinematic masterpiece was created in recognition of the forty-year legacy of Monty Python, "Not the Messiah" seamlessly melds comedic genius with musical grandeur, resulting in a viewing experience that is as hilarious as it is melodically enchanting.
