Plot

In the bustling heart of Broadway, luminous star Linda Paige Esterbrook champions her playwright husband, the unassuming Midwesterner, Gaylord Esterbrook. A native of Redfield, Minnesota, Gaylord pens a sophisticated comedy about the high society of Park Avenue, despite never having set foot in New York City. When the project's producer, Richard Benson, abandons the play due to Gaylord's unwillingness to compromise his artistic vision, Linda's unwavering faith in her husband's talent remains steadfast. She rallies the cast and crew, persuading them to work for a share of the profit, and her determination catapults the play to resounding success. The triumph of Gaylord's debut paves the way for their personal romance, culminating in a marriage that forges an enviable professional partnership, reaping three successive Broadway comedies starring Linda. However, as Gaylord evolves into a New York sophisticate, his writing succumbs to dry spells, which he drowns in bouts of drinking. The equilibrium of the Esterbrooks' world shifts when they cross paths with the influential Swifts, industrialist Philo and his wife Amanda, at a social gathering. Amanda, known for nurturing the "latent possibilities" in successful men, sets her sights on Gaylord, igniting his desire to venture beyond comedy and explore the terrain of tragedy. As Gaylord gravitates towards the allure of Amanda's influence, Linda finds herself at odds with Amanda, whom she views as an interfering force. Linda fears the transformation of her husband into a man he's not, a man far removed from the one she married. The undertow of this external influence threatens to unravel their marriage and Gaylord's career, pushing them to the precipice of a personal and professional catastrophe. Will the Esterbrooks survive this turmoil or will they fall victim to the whims of high society and misplaced aspirations? The answer lies within the riveting narrative of "No Time for Comedy".
