In the quiet seclusion of the English woods, a stately house stands as the home to the cantankerous Mrs. Bramson, her apprehensive niece Olivia Grayne, and their domestic help, Dora and Emily. Olivia, bound by duty rather than affection, acts as a paid caregiver to her demanding and miserly aunt. Their world of routine and quiet resentment is shaken with the arrival of Danny, Dora's unassuming fiancé and a man of simple means.
