Plot

In the heart of a destitute and regressive Mexican community, the deeply devout Catholic priest, Nazario, endeavors to lead a life of humility, void of material possessions. His only sanctuary is an aged hostel, owned by the brusque Chanfa and frequented by society's outcasts - the prostitutes. Nazario's life takes a drastic turn when Andara, a prostitute, violently kills her coworker Camilla over a petty squabble about shell buttons. Wounded and desperate, Andara seeks refuge with the virtuous Nazario. Simultaneously, Beatriz, another inhabitant of the grim hostel, is driven to the brink of suicide by her manipulative boyfriend, Pinto. But Chanfa convinces her to return to her rural roots. When authorities discover Andara's hideout in Nazario's room, chaos ensues. Andara flees, and Nazario, stripped of his cassock, embarks on a wandering journey through the impoverished countryside, assisting the needy and surviving on alms. Nazario's path leads him to a severely impoverished village, where he reunites with Beatriz, now living with Andara. They implore him to help a gravely ill child. With a prayer from Nazario, the child miraculously recovers by morning, inciting Beatriz and Andara to believe in his sainthood, and they pledge themselves as his followers. But their journey is far from smooth. Nazario and Andara find themselves arrested, and the priest, once respected, endures humiliation and physical abuse from the very people he sought to help, as well as from the institution he devoted his life to - the church. Despite his sincere attempts to live according to Christian principles, Nazario is met with mistrust and hatred, with only a local prostitute showing him any semblance of understanding. "Nazarin" is a compelling tale of faith, humility, and the harsh reality of societal prejudice, skillfully entwining the lives of a selfless priest, a reformed prostitute, and a distressed woman in its gripping narrative.
