Plot

In the poignant drama, National Security (2012), two parallel narratives intertwine, taking viewers on a journey through the depths of human guilt, sacrifice, and the pursuit of forgiveness. In one part of the narrative, we follow the deeply spiritual Catholic priest PARK. Consumed by guilt over the tragic murder of a middle school girl returning home from his church, he seeks solace in the only place he thinks he can find it, the arms of the deceased's grieving sister, Soo-hyun. Amidst the shared sorrow and grief, they find themselves drawn into an inescapable love affair. As dawn breaks over their shared nights, the reality of their forbidden love crashes down on them. PARK, unable to bear the burden of his sin, leaves for Peru in search of his best friend and fellow priest, hoping for absolution. Simultaneously, the year is 1984, and we are transported to the infamous Namyeong-dong interrogation facility. Democracy movement leader Kim Jong Tae (Park Won Sang) finds himself ensnared in the merciless clutches of ruthless interrogators. For 22 agonizing days, he endures brutal torture, the tormentors aiming to extract a confession of communist collaboration from him. As each day passes, his resilience is tested, pushing the boundaries of human endurance. National Security is a tale of remorse and resilience, a narrative that explores the depths of human guilt and the lengths one can go to seek redemption. It's a poignant exploration of personal sacrifice, the cruelty of power, and the resilience of the human spirit.
