Plot

Renowned tycoon Avery Summers meets a tragic end in a car accident on his annual birthday ride in his prized Oldtimer. His seemingly oblivious sister, Barbara, is left stunned when she inherits nothing from the business empire their father built. Barbara challenges the claim of family and business lawyer, Robert Benson, that she had agreed to this arrangement—an assertion that even her friend, Samantha Kinsey, owner of the Mystery Woman bookstore, finds highly unlikely. Barbara insists she's been wronged, asserting she has photographic evidence from the birthday party to support her claim. However, her life is brutally cut short by an alleged robber who seems interested only in these incriminating snapshots. The family dismisses the demand for an autopsy and Chief Connors refuses to investigate, leaving the lawyer free to withhold the contentious paperwork. Undeterred, Samantha plunges into the layer-cloaked world of the Summers' family secrets, making her the next target for sabotage. Backed by her friends, Philby and Cassandra, she bravely navigates a labyrinthine mystery that stretches back to the shadows of World War II. As Samantha pulls at the threads of this intricate tapestry, she uncovers a case far more complex than she ever anticipated. Meanwhile, Philby's unsuccessful attempt at plumbing unveils a deep-seated mistrust for the professionals involved—a suspicion that proves to be well-founded. As the mystery unfolds, it becomes clear that the undercurrents of deceit run deeper than anyone could have foreseen, ensnaring them all in a web of danger and intrigue.
