In the obscure mining community of Gold Lick, four misguided teens inadvertently disrupt the tranquility of a historic nineteenth-century cemetery, home to the spirits of a hundred Chinese laborers tragically killed in a mine collapse. This reckless act awakens a fierce demon, Guan-Di, entrusted with safeguarding these tormented souls. Only one teen, Jeff, survives the ensuing chaos.
Haunted by the ordeal, Jeff seeks help from his unlikely hero, Bruce Campbell, a washed-up B-movie star whose glory days are far behind him. Devising a plan, Jeff abducts the unsuspecting Bruce and transports him to Gold Lick, hoping he can save the terrified town from the vengeful demon.
Bruce, under the impression that this adventure is a birthday surprise orchestrated by his agent, willingly plays along. He entertains the local citizens with his flamboyant persona and even attempts to charm Jeff's unimpressed mother. All the while, the body count rises as Guan-Di embarks on a savage rampage.
As the reality of the situation dawns on the down-on-his-luck actor, a question emerges: What will Bruce, a man more accustomed to feigned horror than genuine terror, do when confronted with the very real threat of Guan-Di, the protector of lost souls?
