In the grip of a compelling experiment, Dr. Kendall, a devoted researcher, has spent years teaching Jack, a three-year-old chimpanzee, to communicate through the poetry of sign language. But the march of progress is a slow dance for Jack, too unhurried for the impatient Dr. Peabody, Dr. Kendall's sponsor. Disappointed, Peabody withdraws his funding and heartlessly sells Jack to a cold, clinical medical research lab. Fearing the grim fate awaiting his simian companion, Dr. Kendall orchestrates a daring escape, spiriting Jack away from the sterile confines of his lab home. But in a twist of fate, Jack is inadvertently shipped to Canada, where he tastes the sweet allure of freedom. It is here that he crosses paths with Tara, a deaf girl who understands the silent language of his signs.
