Plot

In the heart of two Mumfords - one a quaint, problem-ridden town, the other a man on a quest for redemption - unfolds a tale of revelation and healing. After a tumultuous past involving drugs and a taxing career as an IRS investigator, "Dr. Mumford" (Loren Dean) finds solace in a rehab center run by benevolent monks. Here, a common thread among the troubled souls he encounters ignites an epiphany. Everyone craves a listening ear, a sanctuary for their deepest fears and hopes. Harnessing his proficiency in computers and manipulation of records, he assumes a new identity, adopting the name of a childhood friend who met an early tragic end. When he stumbles upon a town named Mumford, he sees it as destiny's sign. In this quaint town brimming with woes - from an insecure teenager to a billionaire "king of modems" burdened by his wealth - Mumford establishes his practice, offering an unconventional approach to psychology. His empathetic charisma and refreshing methods quickly attract a colorful array of patients, many of whom begin experiencing remarkable breakthroughs. Among them, a young woman for whom traditional treatments have consistently failed engages in a transformative journey under Mumford's guidance. However, as his practice flourishes, it also invites skepticism and scrutiny from the town's conventional practitioners who harbor doubts about his unorthodox methods. As the plot unfurls, the doctor's lack of formal education in psychology becomes increasingly apparent, culminating in a formal complaint about his practice. Meanwhile, his promise of confidentiality to his patients is questioned, and a complex emotional transference begins to develop with the young woman he's profoundly helped. Yet, beneath his new persona, Mumford harbors a secret of his own. A secret that, like a ghost from his past, is slowly closing in. Through this intriguing narrative, the film Mumford (1999) explores the delicate balance of trust, identity, and the human desire for understanding and acceptance.
