Plot

In the heart of the Pacific Northwest's dense forests, Jake Neeley, a battle-scarred Vietnam lieutenant portrayed by Danny Glover, leads a solitary existence in a secluded cabin. Dealing with haunting remnants of the war, Jake's only connection with the outside world is through Kate, the owner of a nearby small store who regularly provides his necessities. His life is intertwined with those of other lonely veterans who seek refuge in the forest, sharing supplies and companionship in their shared solitude. However, Jake's self-imposed exile is disrupted when he receives an unexpected visit from Henry R. Hocknell, a former private from his platoon. Strathairn's character, Henry, is a dying man, his lungs ravaged by cancer and his future uncertain. He introduces Jake to his young Amerasian daughter, Lenny, played by newcomer Zoe Weizenbaum. With no family to care for Lenny and a grueling cancer treatment looming ahead, Henry implores Jake to take on a role he never expected - that of a guardian to his daughter. Despite his initial reluctance, Henry leaves Lenny in his care and disappears, forcing Jake to confront the ghosts of his past and the realities of his present. As Jake and Lenny's lives intertwine, Jake's hardened exterior begins to soften. Their relationship breathes new life into his existence, sparking a transformation that touches every corner of his life. However, their tranquil coexistence is threatened when a sudden tragedy strikes, forcing Jake to make a life-altering decision. The film 'Missing in America' is a poignant exploration of solitude, redemption, and the unexpected bonds that can be formed even in the most unlikely circumstances.
