Plot

In an era of British colonial rule in India, the small village of Sonbai finds itself the target of a ruthless subhedar and his regiment of soldiers, sent to collect overdue taxes. Among the villagers is a strong-willed young woman, Sonbai, whose radiant beauty and indomitable spirit catch the lascivious eye of the subhedar. The powerful man, driven by lust, demands Sonbai to submit to his desires. However, Sonbai resists his advances, slapping him in a daring act of defiance. She flees to the sanctuary of a pepper factory, its air thick with the pungent aroma of ground chillies, and its doors guarded by the elderly but resolute Abu Mian. As Sonbai takes refuge in the factory, the Chowkidar locks the reinforced doors behind her, standing firm against the subhedar's soldiers, the terrified villagers and even the subhedar himself. The subhedar, stung by Sonbai's refusal and the guard's defiance, threatens to annihilate the village unless Sonbai is handed over to him. The village's leadership, under the spineless Mukhiya, contemplates surrendering Sonbai to pacify the subhedar, hoping to prevent further harassment of their womenfolk. Amidst this turmoil, the village teacher, a follower of Gandhi, and a group of brave women, led by the Mukhiya's wife, rise in a feeble protest against the impending atrocity. The stage is set for a climactic showdown, as the villagers must choose between betraying Sonbai or risking the wrath of the subhedar. Faced with this impossible choice, the village teeters on the brink of a decision that could either save them or lead to their destruction.
