Mickey One (1965)

In the throbbing heart of Detroit, a spirited stand-up comic known for his fondness for gambling and women finds himself entangled in the dangerous web of the mob. His unspecified gambling debt is mysteriously acquired by the mob, a chilling consequence of an unknown transgression. Fear gnaws at his soul, prompting a desperate escape to the bustling city of Chicago, where he assumes a new identity. Armed with a stolen social security card from a beaten and robbed homeless man, he becomes "Mickey One," a new persona born from a complex Polish name. As he grapples with menial jobs, his magnetic knack for stand-up comedy does not remain hidden for long. He lands a gig at a nondescript club, his talent drawing the attention of Ed Castle, a downtown club owner who pushes Mickey into the spotlight of his club, Xanadu. However, Mickey's paranoia, born from his past, casts a long shadow over his newfound success. He is terrified of being thrust into the limelight, fearing that it will serve as a beacon for the mob he's desperately trying to evade. His life becomes a labyrinth of suspicion and fear, unable to trust anyone, including Jenny Drayton, a woman he encounters at his rooming house and with whom he embarks on a tentative relationship, his agent George Berson, and even his own shadow. Mickey's paranoia morphs into an all-consuming fear, leading him to a high-risk decision that could either free him from his past or drag him back into the deadly clutches of the mob. Amidst the neon lights and the laughter, Mickey One must confront his fears and make the ultimate gamble. The stakes? His life.
