Our protagonist, DJ Huey Calhoun, is a good-hearted local lad with an infectious ardor for R&B music. His life takes a melodious turn when he stumbles upon the talented Felicia Farrell, an emerging black singer, in the pulsating heart of Beale Street’s nocturnal world. Despite the disapproval of their kin - Huey's narrow-minded mother and Felicia's protective club-owner brother - they daringly embark on a clandestine romance. As they rise through the ranks of the music world, their relationship is subjected to trials by their individual dreams and the external pressures of a society unprepared to accept their unconventional love.
