In the chilling grip of 1944 Nazi-occupied France, Mélanie Thierry embodies the role of Marguerite Duras, a renowned author and fearless Resistance member. As Emmanuel Finkiel's adaptation of Duras's autobiographical novel "The War: A Memoir" unfolds, we are plunged into Marguerite's desperate struggle ignited by her husband Robert Antelme's deportation to Dachau by the Gestapo. Being a leading figure of the Resistance, Robert's absence not only leaves Marguerite suffering the agony of uncertainty, but also disrupts her clandestine affair with her comrade Dyonis. As the war tightens its grip, Marguerite dares to enter a perilous game of psychological chess with Pierre Rabier, a French-Nazi collaborator played by Benoît Magimel. Determined to find her husband, she navigates an ambiguous relationship with this troubled man, risking everything in a test of courage and resilience. Beneath the shadow of war, Marguerite's world devolves into a silent agony. Months pass without word from Robert, compelling her to confront the unimaginable.
