Plot

Born in the immediate aftermath of World War II, Neil Baldwin is a man whose spirit transcends the learning difficulties he grapples with. With an insatiable zest for life, bolstered by his mother Mary's unwavering support, Neil dares to break from his butcher's apprenticeship to chase a life under the big top as Nello the Clown. When the circus leaves town without him, he doesn't let the setback dampen his spirit. Instead, he finds a new home at Keele University, where his mother works as a cleaner. Here, he crowns himself the unofficial ambassador for incoming students, a role that is later recognized with an honorary degree in 2013. His love for football propels him to manage the university's unofficial team, which is affectionately named after him. In 1992, Neil's undeniable charm and wit land him the roles of kit man and mascot for Stoke City, a football team he passionately supports. Neil's life is a testament to the power of determination, with no boundaries in sight. His fascination with religion leads him to lay preaching, and his audacious charm earns him tea with MP Tony Benn at the House of Commons. He also forges an unexpected friendship with Prince Andrew at Cambridge University, leading to his inclusion in the queen's Christmas card list. Despite dealing with life's harsh blows, including the loss of his cherished mother, Neil's indomitable spirit remains unbroken. His life, in all its unpredictability and triumphs, is nothing short of - marvellous.
