Plot

In the shadowy depths of the 1700s Austrian landscape, a young apprentice, portrayed by Udo Kier, finds himself entangled in a web of deceit, brutality, and moral ambiguity. Under the ominous guidance of his seasoned mentor, Herbert Lom, he is initiated into the chilling world of witch-hunting, a duty he believes to be a righteous service to the church. However, as he delves deeper into this grim path, he is haunted by the escalating violence, the stark injustice, and the blood-curdling torture he witnesses. The facade of their holy quest begins to crumble when he catches his revered mentor committing an unthinkable crime, shaking his faith to its core. As his disillusionment grows, Kier uncovers the sinister truth behind the witch trials. They are nothing but a well-orchestrated scam by the church, designed to strip innocent people of their land, wealth, and cherished possessions, even exploiting the allure of beautiful women. This harrowing journey of revelation forces him to question the sanctity of his beliefs, plunging him into a tumultuous internal struggle. Will he continue on this path of destruction, or will he find the courage to rebel against the tyranny he once revered? 'Mark of the Devil' is a chilling exploration of faith, power, and the thin line between righteousness and corruption.
