Plot

In the gripping Dutch drama "Majesty" (2010), the steadfast Queen Beatrix finds herself in a tense standoff with PM Balkenende's cabinet on the day of her grand annual State Opening of Parliament in The Hague. With only an hour before the ceremony, the Prime Minister makes an unexpected appearance, demanding a last-minute alteration to the Queen's speech concerning aid to Africa - a cause that resonates deeply with Beatrix due to her shared obsession with her late prince-consort Claus. Despite the mounting pressure, Queen Beatrix resolutely resists the imposed changes, her resistance stirring echoes of dynastic traumas past. Her mind drifts back to the harsh memories of her exile to Canada, her heartfelt visit to the victims of the Flood disaster, and the tumult her parents endured during the infamous Hofman case at Palace Soestdijk. Meanwhile, her confidante and crown prince, Willem Alexander, faces a profound dilemma. Torn between loyalty to his mother and his commitment to parliamentary rule, he is reminded of his own controversial marriage and the possibility of renouncing succession. As the clock ticks down, the royal family's dynamics and the nation's future hang in the balance. "Majesty" is a stirring exploration of duty, tradition, and the personal costs of leadership. It masterfully interweaves the grandeur of royalty with intimate family drama, offering a compelling glimpse into the heart of a queen and the burdens of her crown.
