Plot

In the fortress of his power, King Henry II (Sir Patrick Stewart) has confined his ambitious wife, Eleanor (Glenn Close), to the cold isolation of the castle towers. His motive is as much to stifle her repeated insurrections as to indulge in unbridled passion with his youthful mistress (Yuliya Vysotskaya). Yet, the Queen's resentment towards her enforced solitude is tinged with a lingering love for the King. Eleanor channels her cunning and ire through her sons, weaving a dangerous web aimed at the King's downfall and the ascension of her favoured son, Richard (Andrew Howard), to the throne. Meanwhile, John (Rafe Spall), their youngest and most corpulent sibling, holds the unique distinction of being the apple of his father's eye. On the death of their elder brother, the naive John becomes the King's chosen heir. However, with the intoxicating scent of power wafting around him, John too is drawn into the labyrinth of conspiracy, aligning himself with his crafty middle brother, Geoffrey (John Light), and the youthful King of France, Phillip (Jonathan Rhys Meyers). Geoffrey, the perennial observer, spots an opportunity within his youngest brother's weakness, viewing it as his stepping stone to seize the throne. Each character is caught in a game of thrones, where love, loyalty and power are interchangeable currencies in their quest for supremacy.
