Plot

Acclaimed movie star Philip Trent, renowned for his portrayal of the amateur detective Selby James, longs for an escape from the unconvincing narratives and shallow characters of the six-part movie series. His dissatisfaction lies in the source material - the Selby James novels, penned by the seemingly elusive Peter Dean. Despite the series' commercial success, Trent swears off ever donning the detective hat again. Seeking tranquility away from the silver screen, he embarks on a cruise from Los Angeles to San Francisco, hoping to blend in with the crowd. His peace is interrupted when he stumbles upon Peter Dean onboard, who is not the man he imagined but a woman using a pseudonym for professional discretion. Dean is there with a mission - to persuade Trent to star in the next Selby James movie, for which she is crafting the screenplay. Unbeknownst to them, the voyage takes a sinister turn when a murder takes place, intricately tied to the theft of the precious White Dragon diamond, which was en route to San Francisco. Despite his initial reluctance, Trent finds himself drawn into the murky depths of this real-life mystery, mirroring the implausible scenarios he had previously criticized. Alongside Dean, he navigates through a sea of eccentric passengers, including Mert Morgan, a relentless studio publicity man eager to exploit the situation to promote Trent and the forthcoming movie. As the plot thickens and more bodies appear, Trent finds himself in a web of intrigue and danger, forced to employ the very methods of his on-screen persona to unravel the truth. Just when he thought he could distance himself from Hollywood, Trent finds himself in a plot that surpasses any Selby James narrative, hunting a killer and the missing Dragon diamond. The line between fiction and reality blurs as he grapples with this unexpected mad holiday, discovering that life can be stranger - and more thrilling - than the movies.
