In the tranquil setting of a country town, we meet Elsie Townsend, a restless young woman with dreams of wealth and escape. She finds herself entangled in an illicit affair with the town's married tycoon, Rick Chambers, becoming his adored mistress. Yet, when Rick's ailing wife, Martha, whispers a terrifying secret - that Rick plots to murder her for her fortune while still retaining his freedom - Elsie is drawn into a perilous scheme. Agreeing to the unthinkable, Elsie joins Rick in a staged plot to frighten Martha to death. But the plan goes awry and Rick is the one caught in the crosshairs of justice.
