In the serene town of Gold River on Vancouver Island, Mike Maquinna finds himself returning to his ancestral roots to bid adieu to his father, the venerated Mowachaht/Muchalaht First Nations Chief, Ambrose Maquinna. Despite grappling with a tumultuous past marred by alcoholism and detachment from his heritage, Mike's intent is to return swiftly to his existing life as a logger in Bella Coola, steering clear from his destined role as the succeeding Chief. However, the tranquility of the town is disrupted by the appearance of Luna—a sociable Orca whale, dubbed so by western media, with an unusual affinity towards humans and their vessels. Luna's presence ignites a whirlwind of public fascination and speculation, particularly when it is suspected that Luna might be a lost juvenile from a distant pod residing south in Puget Sound. The Department of Fisheries & Oceans (DFO), with Ted Jeffries at the helm, sees this as an opportunity to reunite Luna with his pod—a decision that involves capturing the young, free-spirited Orca. This move, however, stirs discontent among Mike and his tribe who believe Luna harbors the spirit of their departed Chief, Ambrose. They passionately advocate for Luna's right to choose his own destiny. As Mike navigates this tumultuous scenario, he finds himself tending to Adam Ross, a troubled youth from his tribe, a responsibility that gradually draws him back into the fold of his tribal life. Amidst the chaos, the tribe finds an unexpected ally in Jill Mackay, a local DFO officer who courageously challenges her authoritative boss, Jeffries, in a bid to protect Luna's freedom. Thus, the story weaves a complex tapestry of cultural heritage, environmental issues, and personal redemption, set against the majestic backdrop of Vancouver Island.
