Plot

In the heart of the Bronx, 1942, tragedy strikes the Kurnitz family as Evelyn Kurnitz succumbs to a lengthy illness. Eddie Kurnitz, her husband, is left with a mountain of medical bills and a desperate need to secure a job as a traveling salesman. This necessitates Eddie to approach his estranged, stern-speaking mother for a difficult favor-- to take in his two adolescent sons, Jay and Arty, affectionately referred to as Yakob and Arthur by their grandmother. As they move in with their formidable Grandma and their eccentric Aunt Bella in Yonkers, the boys find themselves in an unfamiliar and discomforting world. Their Grandma's candy store, a supposed haven of sweetness, becomes a daunting place for them. The boys struggle to comprehend their Aunt Bella's peculiar behavior, marked by an exorbitant level of excitement and a short-lived attention span, making her seem childishly innocent yet profoundly complex. Their lives are further stirred by the unexpected return of Louie Kurnitz, their uncle and a notorious gangster's henchman. He is on the run from Hollywood Harry, a threatening figure after what Louie has concealed in his mysterious small black bag. As Jay and Arty scramble to gather money to aid their father and regain their independence, they contemplate stealing their Grandma's hidden treasure of $15,000. Simultaneously, Bella dreams of marrying her naive movie theater usher boyfriend, Johnny, and opening a dream restaurant, a dream that ironically also requires a chunk of her mother's hidden fortune. Amidst all the chaos, Louie is caught in a deadly race against time to stay alive. In this unexpected whirlwind of life in Yonkers, each member of the Kurnitz family embarks on their own mission of survival, love, and dreams, painting a rich tapestry of human resilience and the pursuit of hope even in the face of adversity.
