Plot

Once a respected midshipman in the British merchant marine, James Burke rapidly ascends to the rank of executive officer. An unfortunate broken foot lands him ashore, temporarily derailing his naval career. Following his recovery, the esteemed Jim, whose pride is deeply rooted in his professional competence, joins the crew of the Patna, a decrepit vessel transporting Moslem pilgrims to Mecca under the rule of a savage captain. A fierce storm tests the integrity of the unseaworthy Patna and the courage of its crew. Jim, along with his fellow white crew members, abandons ship without attempting to save the passengers. They are ready to attest to the sinking of the Patna and the demise of all aboard. In an ironic twist of fate, they discover upon reaching port that the Patna had not sunk but was rescued by a French ship. Haunted by guilt, Jim voluntarily faces an inquiry, confessing his act of cowardice. He is rebuked, not just for his actions, but for tarnishing the reputation of the British merchant marine. The inquiry's chief judge questions why Jim didn't just "bury himself 20 feet deep" instead of seeking public humiliation. Following the inquiry, Jim does just that, disappearing into a life of drifting and manual labor in various southeast Asian ports. Yet, his guilt follows him like a relentless shadow. A second chance at redemption comes in an unexpected form: running arms and gunpowder to a tribe oppressed by a cruel warlord. The warlord, aware that heroism and cowardice are separated by a thin line, waits to see how Jim will act. Will he rise to the occasion or crumble under the weight of his past? Now known as "Lord Jim" among the natives, the once proud officer faces a destiny he can't outrun, offering a chance for redemption or a lifetime of remorse.
