Plot

Set against the tumultuous backdrop of Thatcher-era politics and the Irish conflicts, Looks and Smiles acquaints us with the life of Mick, a well-intentioned but directionless lad from Sheffield. Unlike the hopeful Dickensian character Pip, Mick's world is devoid of expectations. He resides with his family, tinkers with his motorbike, relentlessly searches for employment, and receives his biweekly dole cheque in a city where opportunities are as scarce as hen's teeth. Mick's companion, Alan, chooses a different path, enlisting in the army to repair tanks and finding himself dispatched to Belfast to suppress Catholic uprisings. Amid the grey monotony of joblessness and societal unrest, Mick encounters Karen at a disco - a young woman working at a shoe shop and grappling with her parents' recent separation. Karen, yearning for her father's presence, becomes a beacon of emotional stability for Mick, offering him a potential passage to adulthood. In a world where his best friend has surrendered to the rigors of the army, Mick is left to ponder: does a future await him amid the bleak landscape of his present?
