In a desperate bid to salvage its rapidly deteriorating global image, the American senate assigns comedian Albert Brooks an unusual task: to pen a 500-page account of what makes Muslims in India and Pakistan laugh. Leaving behind his wife and young daughter, Albert embarks on this peculiar journey, flanked by two government officials. Landing in New Delhi, he sets up an office and hires a charming secretary named Maya. He starts his quest by randomly probing people about their sources of laughter, only to be met with suspicious stares and uncooperative responses. Undeterred, Albert takes his mission public, planning a comedy show in the historical heart of old Delhi. Despite successfully filling a school auditorium with curious locals, his comedy act falls flat. Not one to admit defeat, Albert sets his sights on Pakistan, but his plans are thwarted when he's told a visa will take another 14 days. Undaunted, he crosses the border illegally, meeting a group of aspiring comedians in a hidden location near the border, guarded by gun-toting men. His humor strikes a chord, but the mystery of Muslim comedy remains unsolved. A disheartened Albert returns to Delhi, where Maya informs him she's only gathered enough material for 4 pages. Unbeknownst to Albert, his actions have sparked the attention of both Indian and Pakistani governments, leading to increased military activity near the volatile border. To add to his woes, Maya confesses her plans to break up with her boyfriend, hoping Albert's departure might push her boyfriend to leave. Just as things seem bleak, a glimmer of hope appears in the form of an invitation from Al-Jazeera television for an interview.
