Lines of Wellington (2012)

In the chilling dawn of September 27, 1810, the ominous echoes of war reverberate through the Serra do Buçaco. The French forces under the iron hand of Marshal Massena clash with the Anglo-Portuguese army led by the strategic genius, General Wellington. In spite of a triumphant victory, the Anglo-Portuguese forces, outmatched in numbers, strategically retreat, luring the enemy towards Torres Vedras. Here, Wellington's near-impenetrable fortified lines stand as the last bastion of hope. While the gears of war turn, a monumental evacuation is set in motion, scorching the earth between the battlefield and Torres Vedras. This scorched earth strategy leaves the French bereft of supplies, their hunger gnawing at their morale. Amidst this chaotic backdrop, a mosaic of characters, rich and poor, soldier and civilian, young and old, find their lives intertwined and irrevocably altered by the cataclysm of war. From the idealistic Lieutenant Pedro De Alencar to the cunning English child Clarissa Warren, from the shady merchant Penabranca to the wrathful Sergeant Francisco Xavier and the sultry siren Martírio, they all converge on disparate paths towards the fortified lines of Torres Vedras. Harried by the relentless French and beleaguered by the merciless elements, this mass exodus of fugitives press on, fueled by a dogged determination to defy the invaders and reclaim their homeland. Some driven by survival, others by the tantalizing opportunity to exploit the chaos for their own gain. As they approach Torres Vedras, the decisive final battle looms, a crucible that will decide not only the fate of the war but also the destinies of these diverse characters. Each one poised on the precipice of their lives, their fates bound to the Lines of Wellington, where their future will be etched in the annals of history.
