Plot

Newly transferred Brigadier Stéphane Ruiz (Damien Bonnard) finds himself thrust into the murky depths of Paris' Anti-Crime Brigade, forced to work elbow-to-elbow with morally dubious veterans Chris (Alexis Manenti) and Gwada (Djebril Zonga). These streets, the same that fueled Victor Hugo's masterpiece Les Misérables, are now his to patrol in the volatile suburb of Montfermeil. Dancing a delicate waltz, he grapples with maintaining a fragile peace between his tarnished squad and the wary denizens of the local housing projects, while striving to build bridges with the community's influential figures. However, when a routine arrest spirals devastatingly out of control, the trio of lawmen find themselves teetering on the edge of a precipice, struggling with the guilt-ridden aftermath of their deeds and the looming threat of an outraged neighborhood ready to erupt in a storm of vengeful violence. Inspired by the 2005 Paris riots and originally conceived as a Cesar-winning short film, Les Misérables weaves a powerful narrative that led it to compete for the coveted Palme d'Or at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival. It claimed the Jury Prize (shared with BACURAU) and was chosen as France's contender for Best International Feature Film at the 92nd Academy Awards.
