Plot

In the tumultuous year of 1964, a hesitant John Lennon is coaxed by his manager, Brian Epstein, into a publicized meeting with Freddie, his estranged father who deserted him 17 years prior. The reunion is brief and acrimonious. Tragedy strikes three years later as Epstein passes away, prompting Lennon to invite Freddie to his opulent mansion. However, the gathering sours as Freddie's alcohol-induced behavior offends Mimi, the aunt who courageously stepped in to raise Lennon. Amidst growing press hostility, The Beatles launch Apple records. Lennon's controversial statement, claiming the band's popularity eclipses Jesus', only adds fuel to the fire. Domestic discord escalates, with Lennon constantly at odds with his patient wife, Cynthia, culminating in marital collapse. This crisis leads to a pivotal encounter with Japanese performance artist, Yoko Ono. As Lennon's personal history tragically echoes, he leaves Cynthia and their son Julian, commencing a new chapter with Ono, with whom he fathers a second son, Sean. In a politically charged move, Lennon renounces his M.B.E. in 1969, expressing dissent against England's backing of the Vietnam War, while his peace-promoting antics with Ono further alienate the press. Not long after, Lennon disbands The Beatles, causing a rift among the remaining members. After a series of heated exchanges with Paul McCartney, Lennon seeks therapy, which takes him back to the day Freddie abandoned him. The revelation that Freddie needs his assistance in penning a biography precipitates a final, explosive confrontation between father and son.
