Plot

In the throes of WWII, a Jewish man, desperate to preserve precious remnants of his life, buries suitcases filled with cherished belongings in the soil of Antwerp. After the war extinguishes his family, he is consumed by a fervent quest to unearth these suitcases, a poignant metaphor for his lost loved ones, turning him into a figure of obsession. His daughter Chaya, a vibrant, modern girl, is in search of a part-time job and lands a position as a nanny for a large, strictly observant Chassidic family. Her secular lifestyle stands in stark contrast to their religious customs, yet she's kept on due to the overwhelmed mother's need for help. The domineering father reluctantly tolerates her presence. Chaya forms a deep connection with Simcha, the silent four-year-old boy of the family. Through their walks in the park, she nurtures his speech, promising the possibility of his participation in the upcoming Passover Seder. Their apartment building supervisor, a despicable bigot, constantly dampens the family's spirits with his anti-Semitic antics. Unlike the passive family, Chaya refuses to be victimized and retaliates, earning the admiration of the children and inciting the father's wrath. Tragedy strikes when Simcha drowns in the park's pond during an unsupervised visit, an incident that some in the Chassidic community blame on Chaya. The movie beautifully weaves a tapestry of compassion and humanism, even shedding light on the superintendent's pitiful loneliness, his sole companion being his dog, revealing the complexity of his character despite his anti-Semitism. "Left Luggage" is a poignant exploration of loss, love, resilience, and the resilience of the human spirit.
