Fresh from the halls of academia, aspiring psychiatrist Sam and his future wife, Alex, find themselves descending into the sun-soaked labyrinth of Los Angeles, drawn by the allure of Sam's residency. They nestle into the opulent domain of Laurel Canyon, the home of Sam's eccentric mother who is as unpredictable as the city itself. Far from vacant, the house echoes with the rowdy reverberations of a record-in-making, produced by Sam's mother for her youthful lover Ian's band.
