Plot

In the soft glow of the seventh year since Shuzo Miwa's passing, his nearest and dearest gather to honor his memory. Among them are his three old friends - the married Shuzo Taguchi and Soichi Mamiya, and the widower Seiichiro Hirayama. Bound by a shared secret, they confess a longstanding attraction to Shuzo's widow, Akiko Miwa, whose beauty has only blossomed with time. Compelled by a sense of duty and nostalgia, these three friends embark on a mission to find a suitable husband for Akiko's daughter, Ayako Miwa. They see her not just as the mirror image of her mother's beauty, but as an embodiment of innocence that deserves a worthy life partner. Yet, their well-intentioned meddling clashes with Ayako's wishes. Standing at the crossroads of post-war modern Japan and her traditional values, Ayako is hesitant to marry. She feels a deep sense of responsibility towards her mother, fearing that matrimony would leave Akiko in solitude. This tangle of desires between Akiko, Ayako, and the three friends tightens, straining their relationships. As the tension rises, Ayako's best friend and co-worker, Yukiko Sasaki, steps in. Witnessing the unfolding drama, she decides to ensure that her friend and her friend's mother find their path to happiness in the wake of Shuzo's demise. The story of Late Autumn paints a poignant picture of love, loss, and the delicate dance of desires in a changing world.
