Plot

In the golden age of ancient Egypt, Pharaoh Khufu, portrayed by Jack Hawkins, sits atop a mountain of wealth, obtained through years of relentless warfare. His obsession with gold is rivaled only by his desire to carry it with him into the afterlife. This fixation prompts him to enlist the expertise of a recently enslaved master architect, Vashtar, played by James Robertson Justice. Khufu's proposition to Vashtar is as simple as it is ambitious: construct a tomb within his pyramid so secure that it can keep the wealth safe from the clutch of grave robbers, ensuring his opulent journey into his "second life." As the sands of time pass and the pyramid rises, a captivating twist in the tale emerges in the form of the alluring Princess Nellifer from Cyprus. Gifted to Khufu as tribute, Nellifer, portrayed by Dame Joan Collins, quickly ascends the ranks to become the Pharaoh's second wife. Her beauty, however, belies a calculating mind with greed to match Khufu's own. Intrigued by the Pharaoh's vast wealth, Nellifer plots a double-edged strategy. She aims to rob Khufu of his treasured afterlife journey, preventing him from taking his wealth into the beyond. Simultaneously, she conspires to expedite his passage into that very afterlife. "Land of the Pharaohs" (1955) is an intoxicating journey into the heart of ancient Egypt, where wealth, power, and deceit intertwine, and the promise of immortality lures kings and paupers alike into a deadly dance of ambition and treachery.
