Plot

In the bustling city of Bombay, where millions lead lives of hardship, Haricharan Mathur peddles newspapers on his bicycle, his existence marked by one profound difference - he is both deaf and mute. One fateful day, a comical collision introduces him to Aarti, who shares his world of silence. A spark ignites between them, leading to a love that transcends spoken words, culminating in a marriage marked by sign language and shared dreams. Their joy knows no bounds when they welcome a son, a beacon of normalcy in their muted world. However, their tranquility is shattered when a burglary by Aarti's brother, Kanu, on a stormy night results in a heartbreaking tragedy - the loss of their child. Struck by grief and left without his bicycle, Haricharan's life takes a sharp turn. He trades his newspaper delivery for polishing shoes, a humble means to keep their lives afloat. Amidst these trials, they are blessed with another son, Amit, whose ability to hear and speak brings a ray of hope into their silent world. They dream of a learned future for Amit, a life far removed from their own struggle. But will their dreams be realized, and how will Amit navigate his unique upbringing? As the years roll by, the narrative takes a poignant turn when Aarti succumbs to a brief illness, leaving Haricharan and their now-teenage son to grapple with their loss. As Amit steps into the world of romance, he finds himself drawn to a girl who shares his parents' silence. The story unfolds over two decades, weaving a heartfelt tale of love, resilience, and the unspoken bond of a family, living in a world defined by silence, yet filled with emotion. This is the compelling saga of Koshish (1972).
