Klute (1971)

In the quiet town of Tuscarora, PA, businessman Tom Gruneman has vanished without a trace. Six months into his mysterious disappearance, the police are clueless, and Tom's desperate wife, Holly, along with his boss, Peter Cable, enlist the help of their friend, John Klute, a private detective inexperienced in missing persons cases. Their only lead? A typewritten, obscene letter, supposedly from Tom to Manhattan's actress-model-call girl, Bree Daniel. Bree, who admits receiving such letters and disturbing phone calls, can't recall Tom, even when presented with his photo. Her life, a turbulent blend of compulsion and financial necessity, forces her into the shadowy world of tricking. John Klute and Bree Daniels are thrown together in this dangerous pursuit. At first, their interactions are a battle of wills, each seeking psychological dominance, especially as Bree initially resists any cooperation. As time goes on, they find themselves entangled in a complicated relationship, fueled by emotional necessity. Bree struggles against this intimacy, her personal demons pushing her back into her precarious life. Their investigation dives deeper into Bree's call girl universe, and they can sense they're inching closer to the truth as a menacing tormentor starts targeting Bree. The key to Tom's sudden disappearance might, they believe, lie with a violent john from Bree's past who attempted to kill her around the time Tom vanished, a face she cannot recall.
