Plot

In the grandeur of an opulent mansion, 12-year-old Kathleen finds herself surrounded by staff, but yearns for the warmth of a real family. Orphaned of a mother and neglected by a work-absorbed father, she spins tales of an idealistic home life, complete with a loving mother and attentive father. This fabricated existence, however, complicates her social life, as the truth would shatter her carefully woven illusions. In the midst of Kathleen's solitary world, her relationship with her austere nanny, Mrs. Farrell, is less than harmonious. In a bid to alleviate tension, Kathleen's father introduces Dr. Kent, a compassionate psychologist, as her summer caretaker. Concurrently, the father considers Lorraine, his new love interest, as a potential wife and mother figure. However, Lorraine is icy towards Kathleen, who reciprocates the sentiment. In the flux of these changes, Kathleen finds an unexpected ally and ideal mother figure in Dr. Kent. As she navigates the complex dynamics of her household, Kathleen dreams of a world where Dr. Kent could fill the void left by her absent mother and bring the reality of her fantasy home to life.
