Just Pals (1920)

In the heart of a rustic, early 20th Century hamlet, lives Bim, a man of rags and tatters, who faces scorn and mockery with an indomitable spirit. He is a drifter who's found solace in his languid lifestyle. His ragged exterior, however, veils a heart of gold, a fact that comes to light when he courageously rescues a young runaway, Bill, from the brutal clutches of a railroad cop, taking the beating himself. Bill, warmed by Bim's kindness, stands by him, bravely facing the mockery and cruelty of the town's bully. Bim, wanting more for Bill, persuades him to embrace cleanliness and education, introducing him to the town's quaint one-room schoolhouse, presided over by the charming Mary Bruce. Mary finds herself entangled with Harvey Cahill, a seemingly honorable bank clerk with a dark secret - he's embezzled funds from the bank and shamelessly coerces Mary into lending him money from the school memorial fund she is trusted with, to cover his tracks. As if these challenges weren't enough, the town's scheming doctor and his cunning wife discover Bill might be a long-lost heir. They unscrupulously plot to snatch him away from Bim for the enticing reward. Meanwhile, the deceptive Cahill allies himself with a gang of bandits to rob the bank, intending to pin the blame on Bim, his romantic rival. In this intricate web of deceit and hidden intentions, the strength of friendship and love are put to the test. All the while, the town's ne'er-do-well and his young pal must navigate through the treacherous waters of deceit and betrayal.
