Plot

Haunted by a turbulent past in Ireland, Johnny Doyle seeks refuge in the gritty heart of Brixton, London, an area pulsating with reggae beats and marked by the notorious West Indian 'Yardie' gang's illicit activities. The shadow of his violent history refuses to fade as his former mentor, the relentlessly dangerous Flynn, emerges from the confines of Brixton Prison. Flynn, a sociopathic mastermind, is determined to shatter the fragile Irish peace process with a flurry of strategically placed bombs. Imprisoned by circumstance in his not-so-secure safehouse, Johnny finds himself trapped in a volatile melting pot. He is caught between the rhythmic chaos of a Rastafarian reggae pirate radio station upstairs and the chilling presence of Julius, a ruthless Yardie crack-dealing gangster, below. Flynn, with his manipulative charisma, manages to weave a bond with the Yardies, dangerously intertwining their destinies. In the midst of this looming chaos, Johnny strives to forge his own path towards peace. However, he stumbles into treacherous territory when he falls for Julius's enchanting girlfriend, Rita, igniting a deadly feud that threatens to consume them all. With a pulsating backdrop of reggae, rock, new wave and soul, 'Johnny Was' is a thrilling exploration of race, morality, identity and loyalty, reminiscent of gripping classics like 'Lock Stock' and 'The Long Good Friday.' In this enthralling narrative, questions arise, alliances shift, and battle lines are drawn, leaving viewers on the edge of their seats as they journey through this raw and captivating tale of survival and redemption.
