Plot

In the shadow of the towering hydroelectric dam, the relocated town of Jindabyne, nestled in the southeast corner of New South Wales, is home to an intricate web of relationships. Among its residents are Stewart and Claire, a former race car driver turned service station owner, and a pharmacist, respectively. Their love for each other echoes through the valleys of their turbulent past, marked by Claire's post-partum depression and Stewart's emotionally closed-off demeanor. Accompanied by their friends, Carl and Jude, guardians to their disruptive granddaughter Caylin-Calandria, and Rocco with his indigenous girlfriend Carmel, they form a unique yet harmonious collective. Young parents Billy and Elissa round off the group, with Billy casually working as a mechanic for Stewart. Each year, the men retreat from the humdrum of everyday life, embarking on a multi-day fly fishing expedition to a secluded part of the river. This year, however, their tranquility is shattered when Stewart discovers the lifeless body of a young Aboriginal woman in the flowing river. The men's decision to continue fishing and report the chilling discovery days later sends shockwaves through the peaceful town. This decision not only incites the ire of the community, especially the Aboriginal population, but also threatens to unravel the fabric of Stewart and Claire's strained marriage. Claire, the last to learn of the gruesome discovery, is left shaken to her core. Her faith in her relationship with Stewart wanes as she grapples to understand his actions. With a resilient spirit, she becomes determined to seek justice for the victim's family, even if it means standing against her own kin and the dead girl's community. Her pursuit of connection and rectification pushes her marriage to Stewart and their serene life with their young son to the precipice. "Jindabyne" is a tale of a murder that morphs into a haunting exploration of a marriage, seeping into the lives of its characters and the fabric of the town. It's a cinematic journey that examines the things that silently haunt us, even in the midst of the most breathtaking landscapes.
