Plot

In the quaint southern enclave of Azalea Springs, the echoes of tradition still hold sway, where membership in "The League" is a social necessity and the town's ladies champion voluminous hairdos. The only acknowledged homosexuality belongs to hairdressers and interior designers, a stereotype the town clings to. However, the tranquility of this time-worn society is disrupted when an AIDS facility opens its doors, leaving The League members in a state of unnerved confusion. Further shockwaves ripple through town when they discover that their charitable efforts will involve interaction with the facility's residents. Chaos truly ensues when an offhand, alcohol-fueled remark about the town's water supply spawns a wild rumor: the water is tainted with a substance that can supposedly "turn" people gay. Amplifying the madness are Brother Daniel's "Homo-No-Mo" meetings, a zealous group of homophobic demonstrators, and the local newspaper's front-page attention. Amidst the communal pandemonium, mothers shriek, women sob, and children are ushered to safety. Caught in this whirlwind is Alex Stratton, a young woman grappling with a distant husband, overbearing mother, and the numbing monotony of society gossip and ceaseless shoe critiques. Bucking her family's expectations, Alex takes a job at the Hospice where she reunites with Grace Miller, her high-school best friend who has returned to Azalea Springs following a bitter divorce. Their friendship takes a scandalous turn when they're discovered sharing an intimate moment in the Hospice supply room. Simultaneously, Mark Anderson, an employee at his father's newspaper and a regular at Brother Daniel's sessions, finds himself entangled with Tomas, a Latin house painter who mistakenly stumbles into an ex-gay meeting, thinking it to be an A.A. gathering. The ensuing events from these two unconventional love stories serve as a stark reminder of the havoc that can ensue when fear and homophobia seize control of a society.
