In the swirling chaos of 1939 New York, Guy Johnson (James Stewart), an earnest yet inexperienced private detective, finds himself ensnared in an intricate web of deceit and murder. Hired by the affluent yet reckless Willie Heyward (Ernest Truex) to temper his penchant for intoxication and trouble, Guy becomes an unwitting pawn in a deadly game.
