It's a Gift (1934)

Meet Harold Bissonnette, a hapless general store owner, ensnared by the relentless demands of his status-driven wife and the constant interruptions from an impish neighbor child, Baby Dunk, and an insistent insurance salesman, LaFong. The beleaguered shop owner can't seem to keep his shelves stocked with what his customers want, and his dreams of a peaceful life in a Californian orange grove appear to be nothing more than a pipe dream. After receiving an unexpected inheritance, Harold seizes the opportunity to purchase an orange ranch through the mail, much to his wife's chagrin. In a whirlwind of anticipation and adventure, the Bissonnette family packs up their lives and embarks on a journey to the golden state, leaving behind the confines of their humble store. Upon arrival, their dreams are shattered by the sight of their new home: a desolate shack, a solitary, withering tree, and an orange grove that seems as barren as a desert. The happiness and tranquility they had envisioned quickly crumble around them, their car disintegrates, and their hopes of a fruitful life in California seem to evaporate into the dry, dusty air. However, just when all appears to be lost, an unexpected opportunity arises. A racetrack operator shows interest in their seemingly worthless land, and the Bissonnette family's fortunes take an unanticipated turn.
