Plot

In the midst of the bustling world of investigative journalism, we find Lamont Cranston (Rod La Rocque), a revered detective and amateur criminologist. Cranston hosts a daily radio program, sponsored by the Daily Classic newspaper, that often finds him at odds with Police Commissioner Weston (Thomas E. Jackson). The tension between the two escalates when Phoebe Lane (Astrid Allwyn), the publisher's niece and Cranston's new assistant, disrupts the equilibrium of his department. Cranston's broadcast is shaken up when Phoebe hands him a note mid-air, adamant about a looming robbery at the Metropolitan Theatre. Despite his reluctance, he incorporats her tip into his closing remarks. As predicted, the theatre remains untouched, but disaster strikes across town as prominent international banker Gerald Morton (John St. Polis) is murdered and his safe is looted. Cranston beats the police to the crime scene and uncovers evidence that points to a well-orchestrated crime rather than a mere robbery gone wrong. This discovery lands him in jail as a material witness, until Phoebe manages to secure his release in time for his next broadcast. Meanwhile, Honest John (William Pawley), a renowned safe cracker, storms into the studio, gun in hand, demanding Cranston absolve him of the robbery allegations on air. As Weston races to the studio, Honest John eludes capture, leaving Cranston and Phoebe to embark on a night club tour in hopes of locating the man who tipped Phoebe about the robbery. Their nocturnal pursuit pays off as Phoebe identifies the mystery man, Flotow (Wilhelm von Brincken), accompanied by Starkov (Tenen Holtz'). Posing as a European newcomer, Cranston manages to infiltrate their circle and sets a lunch date. Concurrently, he and Phoebe break into Flotow's apartment, where a crucial phone call from Morton's butler reveals a significant meeting at the Morton residence. This intriguing web of crime and deception sets the stage for an enthralling journey of truth-seeking and justice.
