Impact (1949)

In the bustling heart of San Francisco thrives Walter Williams, a self-made tycoon, basking in his latest accomplishment - the acquisition of three Denver factories. His seemingly devoted wife, Irene, however, conceals a treacherous secret behind her tender facade. Plagued by a mysterious ailment, she persuades Walter to offer a ride to her cousin, Jim Torrance. Hidden beneath this benign request lies an insidious plot. Torrance, Irene's covert lover, attempts to murder Walter, leaving him for dead on a solitary cliff edge before meeting a fiery demise in Walter's car. Presumed dead, the world mourns Walter, even as he awakens in a moving van, finding solace in the quaint haven of Larkspur, Idaho. Employed as a mechanic by the compassionate Marsha Peters, Walter gradually rebuilds his life, all the while tracking his own 'death' through newspaper headlines. As months pass, a new romance blossoms between him and Marsha, their bond deepening amidst the backdrop of Irene's impending death sentence. Marsha, aware of Walter's past, convinces him to return to San Francisco, urging him to absolve his unfaithful wife. The homecoming, however, is far from welcoming. Walter finds himself ensnared in a web of accusations, with Irene claiming him responsible for plotting Jim's murder. Now, he must tread a precarious path, fighting not only to reclaim his tarnished reputation but also to prove his innocence, all while navigating the treacherous currents of love and betrayal.
