In the bustling heart of Budapest, Anna Zador, a devoted secretary at Count Willie Palaffi's bank, has spent six years in the shadow of her elusive employer. Every day, her bike ride to work culminates in a silent offering of fresh flowers on Willie's desk, yet this Budapest playboy remains oblivious to her existence. However, "Whiskers," a perceptive observer, sees the radiant beauty and sweetness in Anna that Willie has missed, sparking a belief that she could be the ideal wife for him. Despite harboring her own feelings for Willie, Marika, Willie's personal secretary, is persuaded by Whiskers to reluctantly invite Anna to Willie's grandiose costume birthday bash. With Anna's modest means in mind, Marika extends aid for a costume. Amidst a sea of opulence, Anna stands out in her simple angelic attire. Moved by her innocence, Willie asks her to dance, only to retreat upstairs when the laughter of their peers becomes unbearable. While there, sleep overtakes Willie, spiraling him into a dream where an angel, Brigitta, descends from heaven to become his bride. On their wedding night, Brigitta's angelic wings vanish, much to Willie's delight. Yet, her unvarnished honesty soon lands him in a whirlpool of social scandal. In a fit of rage, Willie abandons Brigitta, prompting her to consider sacrificing her soul to become the woman he desires. As Willie grapples with his mistakes, he finds that realization might have arrived too late.
