In the heart of domestic chaos, we meet Clarence, a well-meaning but calamitously clumsy father. His daily disasters, from upending hot soup to treating his baby like a kitten, leave his beautiful wife Mabel at her wit's end. Hoping to offer a peace offering, Clarence plans a trip downtown, promising to return with a surprise for their son, Peter. His choice of gift? An innovative nursing bottle from a quaint drugstore.
Parallel to this, Ambrose, a seemingly devoted husband, embarks on a leisurely stroll, secretly plotting a clandestine meeting with Clarice, the enchanting telephone operator from his apartment building. To kill time before the rendezvous, he ends up at a budget-friendly café, where he crosses paths with Clarence.
The two men find themselves seated next to each other, and a disagreement over Ambrose's less-than-refined table manners escalates into a food-flying fracas. In the ensuing chaos, their overcoats get swapped, setting the stage for a series of comical misunderstandings.
Upon reaching home, Clarence's attempts to unburden his restaurant woes to Mabel hit a stumbling block when she discovers the note from Clarice in the swapped overcoat. Mistaking it as evidence of Clarence's infidelity, she banishes him from the house. Simultaneously, Ambrose's wife stumbles upon the nursing bottle in the mixed-up coat, leading her to suspect him of harboring a secret child.
Clarence, lost and dazed, finds solace in the park with Mrs. Ambrose, who mistakes him for her husband's lover after a fiery confrontation with Mabel. As the confusion peaks, Mabel hands her baby to an unsuspecting Ambrose, causing his wife to faint upon seeing him with an unfamiliar infant. The discovery of Clarice's note in Ambrose's coat finally unravels the twisted knot of misunderstandings, much to Clarence's relief.
