Plot

In the bleak aftermath of her strangulation death, Helen Kenet's husband, Steve Kenet, becomes the prime suspect. Their wartime love story, once vibrant and passionate, has evolved into a tragic tale of presumed murder. Steve, a seasoned fighter pilot, returned home after a two-year stint in Burma only to find himself embroiled in a life-altering scandal. As Helen sought solace in her secretarial job at Brattle Press, under the stern gaze of Willard Whitcombe, their son Richard's life got entwined in the complexities of adult deceit. Despite District Attorney David Wallace's objections, Steve is dispatched to a psychiatric hospital. The shadow of a previous war injury and an ensuing operation looms large over his life, casting doubts and feeding suspicions. Under the meticulous care of Dr. Ann Lorrison, they unearth medical anomalies causing lapses in Steve's memory, making him a stranger to his own past. His inability to recollect the fatal encounter with Helen raises a storm of questions, while his refusal of further operations brings him under the harsh spotlight of blame. As they delve deeper into the labyrinth of Steve's mind, both he and Dr. Lorrison are haunted by the possibility of his guilt. But a flicker of doubt sparks an arduous journey to unveil the obscured truth, driven by the need for justice and a father's love for his son, Richard. Their path, however, is riddled with obstacles, as the hidden forces conspire to keep the truth buried. Dr. Lorrison finds herself torn between her commitment to her patient's mental and physical well-being and her pursuit of justice. Despite her initial skepticism, she begins to question Steve's guilt, venturing into the treacherous labyrinth of a murder mystery, her professional integrity hanging by a thread. As she navigates through the rain-soaked streets, each revelation takes her further into the ominous depths of the case, challenging her beliefs and pushing her towards a dangerous revelation.
