High Life (2009)

In the gritty year of 1983, Dick, an ex-con turned hospital janitor, walks the tightrope of an honest life, nursing a secret longing to have been a lawyer and an addiction to morphine. His life is upturned with the sudden release of his former cellmate, Bug, a notorious fan of April Wine and the source of Dick's abrupt unemployment. Desperate for quick cash to fuel their illicit cravings, Dick devises a daring, precision-crafted plan to raid the cash vault of the era's latest invention - an ATM. He envisions a victimless crime, free of violence and rich in reward. Drawing from his prison fraternity, Dick recruits Donnie, a small-time scammer exquisite in swindling unsuspecting seniors, and seeks a fourth member - a charming ladies man with a boy scout's innocence. He discovers this in Billy, a stranger with a mysterious past only Dick knows. A past that holds a secret, one so destructive that it could spell doom if Bug or Donnie were to discover it. Yet, as they journey deeper into their plot, Dick is confronted with a jarring reality - his criminal compatriots lack his reverence for precision. They are all too willing to veer off the carefully laid tracks and improvise, creating a whirlwind of unpredictable outcomes. As the plan spirals out of control, Dick must navigate the chaos, wrestling with his own demons, the unpredictability of his comrades, and the sinister allure of the 1980s underworld.
